I want to quit, how do I get a better job?

I want to quit, how do I get a better job?. It's been a bad year at work and I want to move on. Is there anything I should be doing to increase my chances of getting a job?

Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute, replies: In the run-up to Christmas many people begin to reassess their careers. The difference this year is that competition for jobs is much tougher.

That's why research suggests that 37% of workers in Britain intend to sit tight until the recession ends.

If you are intent on changing roles now, there are a number of considerations. Don't apply for jobs just because they offer you a way out of your present organisation. Think about whether the jobs you apply for offer natural career progression.

Future employers will ask why you made the moves you have and they will want to see demonstrations of resilience and progression, rather than a tendency to run when the going gets tough.

Ensure your CV is up to date and relevant. It is no good having a one-size-fits-all approach. Each job you apply for will be different, so the skills you will need to highlight should be tailored to the job description you are replying to.

Use business and personal networks to identify opportunities. There is nothing better than a personal recommendation of your capabilities to attract a new employer.

Don't rush into the job market unless you have key talents that make you stand out from the crowd.

Employers are increasingly looking for individuals who are committed to their professional development - those who have qualifications to prove what they say they know.

It could be worth gaining a new professional qualification before you enter the job market. ( thisismoney.co.uk )
